Full SGW — annual licence (12 months) combines FCA SGW, Mercedes-Benz SGW, Renault SGW and VW SGW with SFD and SFD2 in one package for compatible SmartSafe / IQ Scan diagnostic devices. It is designed for workshops requiring authorised access to protected diagnostic and service functions on supported vehicles. The exact scope depends on the vehicle, control unit, diagnostic software version and activated licence.
FCA SGW
Access to supported FCA vehicles with active Security Gateway protection, for permitted diagnostic and service operations.
Mercedes-Benz SGW
Authorisation for protected functions on compatible Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Availability must be checked for the specific model, system and procedure.
Renault SGW
The package includes 20 Renault tokens for access to protected diagnostics on supported vehicles. Dacia availability depends on the specific licence.
VW SGW — SFD and SFD2
Covers SFD and SFD2 within the scope of supported vehicles and approved operations. SFD2 access does not mean unrestricted coding or activation of every additional function.
What is SGW and what does it do?
SGW stands for Security Gateway: protection of diagnostic access to a vehicle. It restricts unauthorised commands to the vehicle’s electronics. Depending on the manufacturer, protection may use a separate gateway module or corresponding software mechanisms.
A diagnostic device may therefore communicate with the vehicle and display certain data while some active operations remain locked. Appropriate authorisation enables supported work through the diagnostic software. Unlocking access does not add functions unsupported by the device or vehicle.
Which operations may require authorised access?
- Clearing diagnostic trouble codes where this operation is protected on the specific vehicle.
- Active tests and bidirectional control of supported actuators.
- Service resets and relevant maintenance procedures.
- Basic settings, learning procedures and adaptations of supported systems.
- Service procedures after replacement of certain parts.
- Supported coding functions, subject to the necessary rights and approvals.
Scope of diagnostic functions
These are types of procedures that may require authorisation, not a promise that every function is available on every vehicle. ECU programming, keys, immobilisers and component protection may require separate software, equipment or access rights.

| Membership of the Stellantis group does not establish that a vehicle uses the same access system; Peugeot, Citroën, Opel and DS must not automatically be considered included in an FCA licence. | |||
| Access depends on vehicle equipment and system software version. | |||
| Dacia availability and token consumption rules must be checked before activation. | |||
| Coverage of other group brands, specific models and SFD2 operations must be confirmed against current SmartSafe coverage. |
Vehicle coverage: what needs to be checked?
Coverage must be checked for the specific vehicle and function. Model name and year alone are insufficient: vehicles from the same series can have different control units, software or protection levels. Provide the VIN, required operation, diagnostic device model and serial number, and installed software version.
The following examples help identify vehicles for an SGW access check. This is not a confirmed SmartSafe Full SGW compatibility list or a guarantee of support for all versions of the listed models.

VW: the difference between SFD and SFD2
SFD (Schutz der Fahrzeugdiagnose) restricts access to certain diagnostic operations. Coding, adaptations, basic settings or active tests on protected systems may require appropriate authorisation.
SFD2 adds another level of protection. Certain changes require digitally signed, manufacturer-approved procedures. Support for an SFD2-equipped vehicle and routine servicing does not mean permission for arbitrary coding, retrofits or activation of functions not available from the factory.
Full SGW includes VW access for SFD and SFD2 within the scope of the activated licence. Check the intended operation, rather than relying solely on the vehicle’s SFD2 designation.
Activation and use
- Compatibility check: provide the SmartSafe / IQ Scan device model and serial number. For a specific job, include the VIN and required function.
- Licence confirmation: check the access term, tokens or limits, market and required user accounts.
- Activation: activate the package according to the instructions for the device and supplied licence.
- Device preparation: install the required updates and provide an internet connection for online authorisation procedures.
- Work on the vehicle: connect the appropriate VCI, identify the vehicle and start the supported service function. Follow the login and authorisation prompts.
- Final check: verify the result and save the diagnostic report where available.

Frequently asked questions
Does Full SGW enable every function on every vehicle?
No. It provides access within the licence scope. Availability of a procedure depends on diagnostic device and vehicle support.
Do I need another diagnostic device?
Compatibility of your existing device must first be checked by model and serial number. Access is not automatically applicable to every SmartSafe or IQ Scan device.
Is unlocking permanent?
It must not be treated as permanent removal of vehicle protection. Licence validity and the duration of individual authorisations depend on the system and access terms.
Are unlocks unlimited?
The Renault part includes 20 tokens. Consumption depends on the access rules. The other included licences remain subject to their terms during the annual period.
Does the package include ECU programming or key functions?
SGW access alone is not a licence for all programming or security functions. These operations must be checked separately.
Check compatibility before ordering
Send the device model and serial number, plus the VIN and required operation for a specific vehicle, to sales@smartsafe-europe.com. These details allow the appropriate Full SGW package configuration to be confirmed.
